A large general contractor recently contacted the Ground Penetrating Radar Systems (GPRS), New York City office. Their goal was to identify all underground utilities within a 40,000 sq. ft. area. At a Bristol Meyers Squibb site in New Brunswick, NJ. Their project consisted of rerouting the main electrical feed which currently existed near the rear of the property.

Upon arrival, GPRS Project Manager Dennis Berthold performed a site walk with the on site personnel. After the site walk concluded, Dennis knew it was going to be a complicated utility locate based on numerous manholes, site lighting, and utility risers that he spotted, while conducting the site walk.

The first mode of action that GPRS took, was to utilize the electromagnetic detector (EM detector.) GPRS was able to identify the main conduit bank, site lighting, and a gas line that existed within the area. The next step GPRS took was to scan, using a 400MHz ground penetrating radar antenna. The 400MHz antenna is designed to locate underground utilities and other subsurface anomalies. Using this technology, GPRS was able to clearly identify the depths of the existing utility lines and conduit bank that were previously detected using the EM locator. All of the findings were marked according to the painted color code which has been established by 811. Lastly, all of the utility line’s coordinates were collected using our GEODE (GPS) device. Collecting coordinates, allows GPRS to create deliverables such as, Google Earth overlays or CAD drawings. Not only is this important to your current project, these drawings can be kept as records for future use.
